NEWS ITEM PART 2


Language Features of News Item


  • Focusing on circumstances (using a simple language in writing the text)
  • Using material process
  • Use action verbs to retell the events 
  • Using saying verbs (Said, Told, reported, informed)
  • Using adverb of time, adverb of place, adverb of manner
  • Sometimes at the beginning of news , the scene is mentioned : Jakarta- .... .../ London - .....
  • Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline 
  • Using past tense in explaining news events. But if it is a fact that until now still happen or still in the form of a fact, the can use simple present tense. Past tense Present perfect tense, and future tense.




Past Tense (Simple Past Tense)

(+) Positive 
S + Verb 2 + O

  • She joined the English club class at school yesterday.
  • Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was the president of Indonesia.

(-) Negative 
S + did + not + Verb 1 
                  Or 
S + To Be (Was/Were) + not
  • Many kids did not like the horror movie.
  • She did not complete her task.

(?) Introgatif 
Did + S + Verb 1 
          Or 
Was/Were + S
  • Did I learn Spanish last summer?
  • Did they allow you to join their English club?

Present Perfect Tense


(+) Positive 
S + have/has + verb 3 
  • They have lived in Jakarta for a long time.
  • He has learned English for one year.
(-) Negative 
S + have/has + not + verb 3
  • Bernard hasn’t checked his account balance since the last payment.
  • I have never been to Australia in all my life.
(?) Introgatif 
Have/has + S + verb 3? 
  • Have most foreign nationals now left the country on the advice of their governments?
  • Has the weather been warm lately?

Future Tense (Simple Future)

(+) Positive 
S + will + Verb 1 + O 
          Or 
S + To Be (am, are, is) + Going To + Verb 1 + O

  • The president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, will visit Irian Jaya tomorrow.
  • Wanda is going to give birth next Friday.

(-) Negative
S + Will + Not + Verb 1 + O 
          Or 
S + To Be (am, are, is) + Not + Going To + Verb 1 + O
  • Motorcycle will not pass through Sudirman street tomorrow, because tomorrow is Car Free Day.
  • They are not going to go Puncak because of the weather.

(?) Introgatif 
Will + S + Verb 1 + O ? 
          Or 
To Be (am, are, is) + S + Verb 1 + O?
  • Will he come late again?
  • Are they going to go to Dufan tomorrow?
